Origin Of HAMMANA

The word "Hammana" may have come from the name of the Phoenician Sun God Hammon" or "Hamman". These two names are derived from the word "Hama" which means heat of the sun.

Geographical Information

Hammana is a wonderful summer resort due to its lovely weather. It is at an altitude of 1100 to 1250 meters above sea level and 25kms away from the capital Beirut.
Hammana is very rich with water, its main sources of water are: the Shaghour fall, Ain-al-Hosa spring, Al-Kadaneh spring, Ain Soltan spring, Ain Maytri spring and many more...Evergreen trees such as pines, firs, spruce as well as some cedar trees are found everywhere in Hammana

Most Famous Agricultural Products

Hammana is very famous for its cherry trees.
There are 5 kinds of cherry trees available in Hammana: Mukahal, Phar3oni, Khamri, Kalb el tayr and Italian. But unfortunately cherry trees have been reduced in number as a result of neglect during the war.
Apple trees are also important in the village and are divided to three kinds: Red, Golden and the summer apple known as: "sans pareil".
Vegetables such as beans are also very famous and they are known as Hammana beans (lubieh hammanieh). The Hammana beans are divided to two kinds:
The "badriyeh" and the "white fasolya". It seems that the weather, the land and the water play a large role in their optimum production. The "badriyeh" is served mostly boiled and dressed like a salad.

Traditions and Specialities

Many years ago and during each summer, a festival was organized in the village known as "Cherries festival" in which many events took place like the procession of decorated cars with cherries... and the festival was concluded with a beauty contest crowning a "Miss Cherries" during a celebration dinner.
We note that the election of Miss Cherries still takes place every summer as well as other events.
When you visit Hammana you will be astonished by the villagers' hospitality and kindness. Generosity towards their guests is very sacred to them. The special meal among others in Hammana is the one "cooked with Hammana beans", (fasolya hammaniyeh), it is a real delicacy...
Dear Hammana visitors we invite you to taste it (if you didn't yet!)!!!
